INTRODUCTION

Hey there, Pathwayers! 👋

As Dr. Seuss whimsically wrote in Oh, the Places You’ll Go!:

“And when things start to happen,
don’t worry. Don’t stew.
Just go right along.
You’ll start happening too.”

It’s can be scary not knowing where to start when you begin to explore your career options. You’ll go through trial and error, try new things, discover your strengths and weaknesses, face challenges and rejections, but above all else, you’ll continue to grow. Today’s Soccer Thought Leader is an excellent example of that.

During her playing career, Shannon Mac Millan was a Hermann Trophy recipient, played for the U.S. Women’s National Team, became a FIFA World Cup Champion in 1999, and earned gold and silver medals during the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, all before women’s club soccer existed in the U.S.

Even after she hung up the boots, and as the women’s game grew, Shannon discovered her “why” and sought to make an impact in her community through the game that inspired her.

What started as a career in coaching a youth club, Shannon is continuing to make an impact in San Diego as the Chief Impact Officer at NWSL's San Diego Wave FC.

We went long, but Shannon’s story is well worth the read. Scroll down to learn more about her career, the impact she’s making, and advice as you looking for the places you’ll go. Plus, we’ve got the latest jobs across MLS, NWSL, and more.

Happy reading!

“YOU’RE GOING TO TELL ME NO? I’M GOING TO PROVE YOU WRONG. YOU JUST GAVE ME EXTRA MOTIVATION…”

Shannon Mac Millan is a U.S Women’s National Team legend. Full stop.

For me, she’s one of the most underrated players of the iconic USWNT 99ers. And I have a feeling those who are in the earlier stages of their career may not know her story well.

So, I was thrilled Shannon agreed to chat with us for this week’s newsletter. She has so many great stories and experiences to share - including some incredible anecdotes about her time playing under the late, great Clive Charles at the University of Portland.

Shannon and I first met when my agency, Name & Number, was supporting Borussia Dortmund during the club’s U.S. Tour in San Diego a couple of summers ago. She and her son, Brayden, joined us for a photo op and private tour of the San Diego Zoo where we got to feed giraffes (!) and see a host of animals up close.

I so enjoyed getting to know her that day and I know readers will enjoy getting to know more about her incredible career - both on and off the field.
